How should you safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on Cadillac Catera?

Gas charged shock absorbers preserve high pressure gas inside thus removing the snap ring from the tube top should be avoided because it might cause explosive output and serious harm to personnel. Wear safety glasses for safe center-punching and drilling of shock absorber tubing since the tube should not be pierced. Placement of the centerpunch should create a 10 mm (0.4 inch) indentation located at the tube bottom. Extend the shock absorber rod fully while placing the clamp around it in position. Drill a 5 mm (3/16 inch) hole at the centerpunch mark on the shock absorber while managing the escaping oil through the use of shop towels. Bring a centerpunch to the middle portion of the tube before drilling another 5 mm (3/16 inch) hole at the centerpunch point. Repeat the same oil drainage process by using shop towels for containment. To drain all oil from the shock absorber first unlock it from the vise then position it horizontally over a drain pan with holes facing downwards while moving the rod through the tube to completely empty the oil.
