• Q: How to replace the water pump on 2001 Cadillac DeVille?

  A: You need to empty the cooling system fluids before taking off the upper filler panel plus other accessories to access the Water Pump. First remove the fasteners and shield of the Water Pump belt, then loosen the Water Pump Drive Belt. The hose clamp pliers (J 38185) enable you to disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the Thermostat Housing. Take off both Water Pump cover bolts and remove the cover. Disconnect the heater return hose from its installation. Place the Water Pump remover & installer tool j 38816-a on the locking ears of the Water Pump and fasten its support plate to the water housing crossover correctly. Twist the tool to detach the Water Pump from housing and remove its support plate and main unit. Clean and inspect both sealing surfaces and the pump water housing parts. Also examine the Water Pump during this process. Place the seal into the water crossover recess where the locking ear notches must be at 7 o'clock position. Then align the Water Pump locking pegs with the tangs in the crossover. Place the Water Pump remover & installer (J 38816-A) and tighten the support plate before turning the tool counterclockwise to draw the Water Pump to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.). Place the Water Pump cover on the heater return hose before installing it to the water housing crossover. After positioning the cover, secure the bolts with 10nm of torque (89 inch pounds). Apply the hose clamp pliers (J 38185) to attach the radiator outlet hose to the Thermostat Housing before placing and tightening the Water Pump belt shield to 10 nm ('89 inch lbs.). Insert and tighten the oil indicator nut to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) before joining the secondary air valve, placing the air filter and upper hood panel while filling the cooling system afterward.
