  A: In an effort to service and repair brake rotors, it is imperative to remember that refinishing is not compulsory in routine servicing of the brake system until there are specific conditions including excessive corrosion, cracks, excessive bluing, scoring beyond maximum specifications, lateral runout, or thickness variation. Check each rotor for thickness and wear of surface and if necessary to be done, then use the Hub Cleaning Kit (J 42450-A) to remove the corrosive elements of brake rotor hub. Mount the brake rotor to brake lathe according to manufacture instruction without vibration dampening attachment loos. With the running of the lathe, move in the cutting tools and touch the rotor friction surfaces and check witness mark. If it does not go three quarters of the way around the rotor, re-mount it. Follow the instructions given by the lathe manufacturer on refining the rotor, monitoring the thickness after each cut and if it is above the minimum acceptable thickness after refinishing, replace the rotor. In order to achieve a non-directional finish, use speed settings as recommended and apply the finish using a non-directional finishing as tool with 120 AlO sandpaper, or by using a sanding block with 150 AlO sandpaper. Spot clean every friction surface with denatured alcohol or a similar brake cleaner after completion. Lastly, take the brake rotor off the lathe and should the need arise, run the Rotor/Drum Flange Resurfacing Kit (J 41013) through and have it cleanse any corrosion off the wheel bearing flange, for otherwise, it may cause an increase in lateral runout and brake system creditability.
