2001 Chevrolet Astro Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2001 Chevrolet Astro?
A: To handle Brake Master Cylinder maintenance you need to remove the part from the vehicle and insert its mounting flange into a bench vise while having easy access to the rear of the primary Piston. Wipe the space around the reservoir cap to prepare your inspection of both parts for cuts, breaks, dents, and distortions. Replace any damaged components at this time. Insert a round-ended tool into the master cylinder reservoir to press the primary Piston down and free the Piston retainer before removing it with the Piston assembly from the cylinder housing. Use low pressure filtered air through the front port to push out the secondary Piston along with its seals while plugging both cylinder inlets and the back port. Thoroughly clean the master cylinder interior and exterior plus secondary Piston and return spring using denatured alcohol while scanning for harm through inspecting parts before replacing the master cylinder when problems are detected. Use filtered air without lubricant to dry parts before applying delco supreme 11 brake fluid (GM P/N 12377967) or equivalent dot-3 fluid that stays sealed for lubrication in the master cylinder bore, secondary Piston, return spring, and overhaul components. Secure the lubricated new primary seal parts onto the secondary Piston then put the new secondary seal on next. Add the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly into the cylinder before you install the lubricated new primary Piston assembly. Push the primary Piston into place using a rounded tool and put back the master cylinder parts afterward. Reinstall the master cylinder to the vehicle.
