2001 Chevrolet Corvette Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the left exhaust manifold on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Start the left Exhaust Manifold replacement by taking off the fuel rail cover and generator and raising and supporting the vehicle. You must first disconnect the Oxygen Sensor electrical connector, remove Exhaust Manifold nuts and connector position assurance (CPA) lock before taking off the Oxygen Sensor connector clip at the body. After disconnecting the Oxygen Sensor proceed with lowering the vehicle. The replacement of the left Exhaust Manifold starts with hose clamp removal from the secondary air injection (AIR) pipe followed by separating the Air Hose from the pipe. Disconnect clamps from the check valves and eliminate the hose from the air injection pipe at both the right and left check valves before removing the air pipe . Deleting the check valve installed on the air pipe should only be done when essential. After removing air pipe bolts you can remove the combination of air pipe with its gasket; discard the old gasket. First disconnect the Brake Booster Vacuum Hose attached to the brake booster before removing ignition coil bracket studs and the bracket while extracting spark plugs and Exhaust Manifold bolts. Remove the Exhaust Manifold and discard its old gasket while you dismiss also the Exhaust Manifold heat shield bolts and shield. You should install and tighten the heat shield and bolts of the Exhaust Manifold to 9 nm torque (80 inch lbs.) if present. Place a 5 mm threadlock gm p/n 12345493 (or equivalent) band over the Exhaust Manifold bolt threads. Install the new gasket between the Exhaust Manifold and its position then begin bolt installation. Start with the center two bolts for first pass torque of 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) followed by the second pass with a final torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) using the same alternating side-to-side bolt order. Bend the gasket edges at the cylinder head rear before fitting spark plugs while mounting the ignition coil bracket. Apply threadlock gm p/n 12345382 together with equivalent product to the coil bracket studs before installing and torquing them to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Attach the Brake Booster Vacuum Hose and put on a new gasket to secure the air pipe with its check valve then bolt it securely to 20 nm torque (15 ft. Lbs.). Attach the air pipe and left and right check valves with corresponding air injection pipe hoses while installing hose clamps at all check valves and the air pipe. Secure the hose clamp at the air pipe while raising the vehicle and apply gm p/n 12377953 compound or equivalent anti-seize to Oxygen Sensor threads. After installing the Oxygen Sensor with 42 nm (30 ft. Lbs.) torque setting at the threads, attach the connector clip to the body before linking the electrical connector. Reposition the generator after attaching the cpa lock then manifold nuts with torque set at 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) before lowering vehicle then reattaching the generator and the fuel rail cover.
