2001 Chevrolet Corvette Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine flywheel on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The solution to replace an engine Flywheel begins with using correct removal techniques and setup sequences to protect the engine Crankshaft thrust bearing from damage. The rear of the driveline needs to be tilted down but at the same time should keep enough space between the engine rear and composite dash panel to avoid hurting the vehicle. Two marks should be applied to both the Crankshaft end and the Flywheel before disassembly since the manual transmission Flywheel lacks a positioning pin for alignment that requires its return to its initial placement. A complete fit of the engine Flywheel against the Crankshaft flange will occur after engine Flywheel bolt implementation through a three-step bolt-tightening process. The automatic transmission engine Flywheel requires replacement as an assembly unit together with its prop shaft hub and flex plate because these components function as a balanced system that should not be separated. The procedure starts with removing the Catalytic Converter and continuing with automatic transmission-support removal and manual-clutch-driven plate separation. First mark the Crankshaft joint with the Flywheel and remove these engine Flywheel bolts and the engine Flywheel for cleaning afterward. The installation method requires both Crankshaft and Flywheel marks to align before you install the engine Flywheel followed by application of threadlock gm p/n 12345382 or equivalent to the Flywheel bolts. Use appropriate fasteners at their designated positions keeping the areas clear of paints or lubricants that can alter torque. Follow the bolt installation with manual tightening up to 20 nm (15 lb ft) in the first phase and continue to 50 nm (37 lb ft) on the second and end with 100 nm (74 lb ft) in the third stage. The driveline support must also be reinstated before reinstallation of the clutch Pressure Plate and clutch driven plate for manual transmissions and finally the Catalytic Converter.
