- Q: How to replace the front brake dust shields on 2001 Chevrolet Prizm?A: To replace the disc Brake Dust Shields on the front, you need to elevate and support the vehicle, then dismount tire and the wheel assembly. If fitted with an antilock brake system (ABS), disconnect the abs wheel-speed sensor by loosening its bolt for it to be set on one side. Next, undo the bolt and brake hose from the strut, then also remove the front brake rotor. The Steering Knuckle can be taken off without breaking the front Ball Joint. Mount the Steering Knuckle in a soft jawed vise and remove the inner seal shield and inner oil seal using the j26941 drive sprocket support bearing cup remover (J26941) and j23907 slide hammer (J23907). Unclip the front wheel bearing retainer with snap ring pliers and remove the brake dust shield bolts with a torx (R) wrench (T30) torque specification 23 nm (17 lb ft). Use the j25287 clutch coil puller (J25287) and j35378 bearing puller pilot (J35378) to pull out the hub and brake dust shield from the Steering Knuckle and pull the brake dust shield off from the hub. For installation, fix the new brake dust shield to the Steering Knuckle using the bolts and tighten them to 8.3 nm (74 ft. Lbs.). Mount the hub on a press with the wheel stud facing down place the Steering Knuckle to the hub and press the hub into the Steering Knuckle with the j35399 differential side bearing cup remover (J35399), j8092 driver handle (J8092), and a press. Now reinstall front wheel bearing retainer using snap ring pliers, then install the inner seal into the Steering Knuckle with the use of j35737-02 inner oil seal installer (J35737-02), using gclb grease (GM P/N 1051344 or equal) to the inner seal lip. In the case of abs, make sure the holes for abs speed sensor match properly. Put on the inner seal shield, take the Steering Knuckle out of the vise, attach it with the ball stud to the vehicle. Finally, install the brake rotor, reconnect the front brake hose and its bolt (torqued at 29 Nm or 22 ft. Lbs.), your abs wheel speed sensor, and its bolt as well (torqued at 8 Nm or 71 inch lbs.), then the tire and wheel assembly, the lowering of the vehicle, and the measuring of the front wheel alignment.
