    A: Starting the wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement requires side cutters to remove the boot clamps before working on the halfshaft bar. Start by cutting through the swage ring with a hand grinder before you remove the tri-pot housing and tri-pot trilobal bushing from the halfshaft bar . Clean all grease off tri-pot assembly roller bearings and housing while thoroughly degreasing the housing and tri-pot trilobal bushing . The transmission sealing surface requires 320 grit 3M cloth (or equivalent) treatment to remove corrosion before allowing the components to dry before assembly. You must first compress the tri-pot boot onto the halfshaft bar before using Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) to separate the spacer rings and remove the spider assembly with its rings and boot. Check the halfshaft bar with a wire brush then examine the needle rollers and needle bearings and trunnion for damage before inspecting the tri-pot housing for unwanted wear and cracks. Replace any broken parts found. First place the new small swage clamp and boot onto the halfshaft bar before installing the swage clamp without swaging the boot into position with its neck sitting in the designed groove. Place the inboard end of the halfshaft assembly into Swage Clamp Tool (J 41048), align the swage clamp inside and secure the top tool half over the bottom half. After ensuring the boot lacks pinch points, install and tighten bolts while aligning boot, housing and swage clamp, performing each bolt tightening step at 180-degree intervals with a ratchet wrench. Re-swage the clamp but only when deformities exist in it. Verify for the presence of "lip" deformities upon completion. Install the convolute retainer into its proper position to catch four convolutions before placing the spacer ring and spider assembly onto the halfshaft bar. Finally, position the second spacer ring at the bar's end groove. The professional uses the kit's pre-measured grease to pack the boot and housing before setting the large retaining clamp onto the boot followed by positioning the housing and tri-pot trilobal bushing over the spider assembly. Position the boot onto the tri-pot trilobal bushing then verify the inboard stroke placement before installing Large Seal Retaining Clamp Tool (J 35566) to secure the boot to the housing. Banish the convolute retainer from the boot.
