2001 GMC Jimmy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2001 GMC Jimmy?
A: Begin steerable knuckle servicing and maintenance procedures with a raised and supported vehicle followed by tire and wheel removal. Moving forward with the process remove the Wheel Hub and bearing from the unit. Start by pulling out both the cotter pin from the outer tie rod retaining nut and then the nut itself. The universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) helps detach the outer tie rod end from the Steering Knuckle. Lift off both the wheel speed sensor wiring harness bracket and brake hose bracket mounting hardware from the Control Arm before disconnecting the brackets. Start by removing the cotter pin from the upper Ball Joint retaining nut before removing the nut. Use a pry bar to lift the upper Control Arm before an assistant helps you hammer the Steering Knuckle next to the upper Ball Joint stud until it releases. First disconnect the lower Ball Joint from its knuckle using a Ball Joint separator tool (J 43631) after removing both its retaining nut and cotter pin. When fitting new components to the Steering Knuckle, begin by installing the Steering Knuckle seal while aligning the knuckle properly to its upper and lower Ball Joint studs. Follow a torque of 108 nm (79 ft. Lbs.) when tightening the lower Ball Joint retaining nut yet maintain a 1/6 turn alignment for the cotter pin. Use the same procedure for the upper Ball Joint but tighten this retaining nut to 83 nm (61 ft. Lbs.) before installing a new cotter pin. Mount the tie rod end ball stud followed by installation of the outer tie rod ball retaining nut before tightening it to 53 nm (39 ft. Lbs.) and adding a new cotter pin for completion. After installation of the Wheel Hub and bearing you should verify that you checked the front wheel alignment.
