2001 GMC Jimmy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to service and repair the torsion bar on 2001 GMC Jimmy?
A: To service and repair the Torsion Bar, the following tools are required: Torsion Bar loading/unloading tool (J 36202). Start by raising the vehicle followed by positioning the adjuster bolt for marking. Position the Torsion Bar loading/unloading tool (J 36202) between the adjustment arm and crossmember until the adjustment arm reaches sufficient tension to release the adjuster bolt load. Remember how many times your tool turns the adjuster bolt because this data will help with later assembly. After taking off the adjuster bolt and adjuster nut you can remove the Torsion Bar loading/unloading tool (J 36202) from the adjustment arm to allow the Torsion Bar to unload. To detach the adjustment arm slide the Torsion Bar forward before unbolting the upper mounting nuts and bolts from the support link and separating the Torsion Bar support from the frame keeping track of how the bars extend and which side requires removal. The installation process begins by taking off both lower mounting nuts from the Torsion Bar links before detaching them from the Torsion Bar support. Begin installation by mounting the Torsion Bar links onto the support component and after that secure the lower retaining nuts with a torque setting of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Secure the upper mounting bolts first at 65 nm (48 ft. Lbs.) before placing the Torsion Bar support on the frame then positioning the torsion bars correctly before securing. Place the adjustment arm on the Torsion Bar support before moving the Torsion Bar back until it locks into position on the adjustment arm. Insert the Torsion Bar loading/unloading tool (J 36202) onto the adjustment arm and crossmember then apply tension to the Torsion Bar as needed and repeat the number of adjuster bolt turns noted during uninstallation. Complete the installation by putting the adjuster bolt and adjuster nut before removing the Torsion Bar loading/unloading tool (J 36202) and lowering the vehicle while verifying wheel alignment.
