2001 GMC Jimmy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the upper ball joint on 2001 GMC Jimmy?
A: Put your vehicle on safety stands before you lift and remove the wheel to access the upper Ball Joint. Use a pry bar to separate the upper Control Arm while you disconnect the wheel speed sensor wiring brackets with their retaining bolt and nut. After this you can move the brake hose bracket away from the Control Arm too. You need a pry bar to push up on the upper Control Arm after taking the retaining nut and upper Ball Joint cotter pin off. When supported correctly, hit the Steering Knuckle toward the upper Ball Joint stud to free it, let the upper joint fall off from the knuckle, and position a blocking piece under the Control Arm to maintain distance between components during suspension of the knuckle using assistance to protect the Brake Line. To replace the upper Ball Joint tune 4.8mm deep holes in each rivet head using an 8 mm drill then use a 12.7mm drill to remove the rivets and take out the Ball Joint with a pin punch. Apply the new upper Ball Joint onto the Control Arm and fasten it with bolts and nuts while tightening them to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.). Secure the upper Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle and tighten it to 83 nm (61 ft lbs) while keeping the stud aligned with the cotter pin opening. Place a fresh cotter pin into the upper Ball Joint stud and bend its ends towards the nut to secure it. Secure the wheel speed sensor wiring harness and brake hose bracket onto the upper Control Arm with its mounting bolt and nut which should be tightened to 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Apply weight on the Torsion Bar and put back the wheel and tire before lowering to test wheel alignment.
