GMC Jimmy vehicles Ball Joint is known to play the role of suspension and steering systems where it links the control arm to the steering knuckle. Thus, these ball joints allow to turn with no restrictions in two perpendicular planes while at the same time not allowing for the translation movement which together with the mentioned above characteristics improves vehicle handling, stability and ride comfort. GMC Jimmy cars mostly have upper and lower ball joints; the additional ball joints in the rear suspension depend on the model. A ball joint is made of steel with a bearing stud and a socket enclosed in a rubber-like boot to keep them from coming in contact with dirty resulting in limited lubrication. These components are crucial in the way through which tire contacts the road with the aim of enhancing the performance of the vehicle.

GMC Jimmy Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the lower ball joint on GMC Jimmy?
    A:
Start servicing the lower Ball Joint by raising and supporting the vehicle before taking off its tire and wheel components. After taking off the Torsion Bar you should remove the wheel drive shaft from its position. Start with a 3.175mm (1/8 inch) drill to make a 6.35mm (1/4 inch) deep hole at the center of lower Ball Joint rivet. Shift to a 12.7mm (1/2 inch) drill to remove the rivet heads. Push the pin punch through each rivet to unfasten them before taking the lower Ball Joint out of the Control Arm. Slip the lower Ball Joint onto its position on the lower Control Arm while keeping to the fastener notice instructions. Connect the lower Ball Joint bolts and nuts then tighten them to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.) torque. Put the wheel drive shaft back and position the Torsion Bar before putting tire and wheel together. After putting the vehicle down end to end check the front wheel alignment.
