2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a two-piece drive shaft on 2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500?
A: The replacement process of two-piece propeller shaft requires clamp plier (J 43218) as your main tool. The correct measurement of all driveline elements must happen before disassembly to guarantee that every part will return to its initial position. Reference marking involves measuring the rear propeller shaft from the pinion yoke of the rear axle and the front propeller shaft from the transmission or Transfer Case when the vehicle is raised. A flat-bladed tool should be used to pry up exposed ends of boot-clamp securement on front or rear propeller shaft stub shafts and slip yokes if they can be removed. The next step involves removing bolts in addition to yoke retainers attached to the rear axle pinion yoke. When removing the yoke ears never strike them because it can create damage to the injection joints. Disconnect the rear propeller shaft from the rear axle pinion yoke by sliding it forward then backward to disconnect from the front propeller shaft stub shaft and complete the removal by taking the shaft out from the vehicle. Begin by taking off the boot from the front propeller shaft stub shaft before proceeding with the center bearing support nuts and the center bearing support. Front propeller shaft removal starts with moving the shaft backward from the transmission or Transfer Case unless the vehicle has rpo mw3 or m74 where bolt and yoke retainer removal from the transmission pinion yoke must occur prior to disconnection. Insert the new front propeller shaft into the transmission or Transfer Case so that reference marks from removal implementation match before torquing the bolts at this stage. Fasten the yoke retainer and its bolts before mounting the center bearing support. Tighten the center bearing support nuts to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.) while the yoke retainer bolts require 25 nm (19 ft. Lbs.). Check for proper lubrication on the splines of the front propeller shaft stub shaft by inspecting it with chassis grease (GM P/N 12377985 or equivalent). Insert the boot and two new clamps next to the front propeller shaft stub shaft when necessary before installing the rear propeller shaft Slip Yoke onto that stub shaft with correct alignment. To finish the installation secure the rear propeller shaft at the rear axle pinion yoke through bolted yoke retainers following mark alignment before thumb-tightening the bolts to 25 nm (19 ft. Lbs. Torque specs.). Use the clamp plier (J 43218) to achieve proper boot clamp dimensions by crimping. After final inspection the vehicle can be lowered.
