2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring on 2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500?
A: The J 9522-3 Universal Joint Bearing Separator and J 9522-5 Universal Joint Bearing Spacer Remover help replace the universal joint's external snap ring. First mark down the propeller shaft orientation for assembly reference then position it horizontally while being supported. First use pliers to pinch each snap ring end before possible cup end tapping for pressure release. The J 9522-3 works with either a 30 mm (1-1/8 inch) hex socket or a 27 mm (1-1/16 inch) socket to push out the lower bearing cup from the yoke ear while the lower yoke ear rests on this tool. Use the J 9522-5 between the seal and bearing cup so you can continue pressing out the cup when it does not fully detach. Use the propeller shaft rotation to push the bearing cup from the other side and then eliminate the crosspiece along with any left-over universal joint components. Check the clean status of bearing cup bores and retaining ring grooves prior to performing complete cleaning operations. Begin assembly by inserting a bearing cup into one side of the yoke then positioning the cross to allow easy trunnion seating before pressing the bearing cup to flush with the yoke ear. Position the second bearing cup while verifying trunnion alignment before sealing it inside the yoke. Push gently until you see the retainer groove then add the bearing retainer before continuing gentle pressure until both retainers snap securely. When retainer seating becomes difficult try using a dead blow hammer to gently open the yoke along with grease application on the snap ring to improve seating process.
