Q: How to replace the universal joint with a nylon injected ring on GMC Yukon XL 1500?
A: Bring the tools required for this task: Universal Joint Bearing Separator (J 9522-3) and Universal Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5). Adjust the propeller shaft in a balanced position first while preventing any tool damage to the tubing. Mark the propeller shaft ends to orient the replacement parts correctly. Install the universal joint through the lower yoke ear onto the 30 mm (1 1/8 inch) socket. A Universal Joint Bearing Separator (J 9522-3) tool cuts through the plastic bearing cup ring before pushing out the lower bearing cup from the yoke ear. Use the Universal Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5) between the seal and the bearing cup to push it out when the cup does not come off completely. Turn the shaft to push out the other bearing cup while noting how the yoke faces the tube. Carefully measure the cross and leftover universal parts before examining the bearing cup slots and sealing bores for foreign objects or blemishes. Wipe out all sheared plastic material from the grooves before installing new bearing cups. After installing one bearing cup into the yoke you need to turn down its ear to put on the cross component and check trunnion free movement. Press the bearing cup into each yoke ear until it reaches flush with the surface and ensure trunnion alignment. You need to check the needle bearings for alignment if assembly is successful. Position the bearing retainer until it passes through the yoke and press it in place using a dead blow hammer if needed. Add chassis grease to the snap ring as needed before inserting it properly into the bearing cup opening.
