2002 Buick Century Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the outer tie rod end on 2002 Buick Century?
A: Vehicle lifting and wheel assembly removal must occur before starting outer Tie Rod End replacement. The prevailing torque nut needs removal on the outer tie rod assembly before you loosen the jam nut which connects the inner tie rod assembly. Driving a wedge to disconnect a steering linkage joint through the joint and its attached part should be avoided because it leads to seal damage and premature failure. The universal steering linkage puller tool (J 24319-B) should be used to extract the outer tie rod assembly from the Steering Knuckle before separating the outer tie rod assembly from the inner tie rod assembly . The installation process requires connecting the outer tie rod assembly to the inner tie rod assembly without tightening the jam nut. Position the Steering Knuckle assembly and install the outer tie rod assembly while using the prevailing torque nut to fasten it at 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) torque with a 120-degree rotation amount. Verify that 2 1/2 - 4 1/2 threads are beyond the nylon washer. Coil the wheel assembly, reduce the vehicle and do a front end alignment before you tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod assembly to 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.).
