2001 Buick Century Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the outer tie rod end on 2001 Buick Century?
A: The first step to replace an outer Tie Rod End requires supporting and lifting the vehicle. First remove the tire and wheel assembly before removing the prevailing torque nut from the outer tie rod assembly and loosening the jam nut of the inner tie rod assembly. A wedge should be driven between a joint and attached part to stop seal damage during steering linkage joint disconnection. The universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) removes the outer tie rod assembly from the Steering Knuckle before the technician detaches the outer tie rod assembly from the inner tie rod assembly . The installation of the outer tie rod assembly requires its attachment to the inner tie rod assembly but the jam nut needs to stay loose. To install the outgoing tie rod assembly to the Steering Knuckle, put the prevailing torque nut onto the tie rod assembly before tightening it to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) while rotating it for 120 degrees. Ensure that 2 1/2 threads to 4 1/2 threads extend beyond the nylon washer. The installation process concludes with tightening the jam nut to 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.) on the outer tie rod assembly while the vehicle maintains its current height and requiring a front end alignment.
