2002 Cadillac Seville Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion (LHD) on 2002 Cadillac Seville?
A: Start the Rack And Pinion replacement (LHD) by inserting the steering column anti-rotation pin (J42640) into the lower steering column trim cover access hole to secure the steering column. The vehicle's suspension should be raised followed by tire and wheel removal. After removing the outer tie rod ends retaining nuts the technician must use steering linkage & tie rod puller (J24319-B) to separate outer tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Trap the intermediate shaft by removing its lower pinch bolt then separate the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion. The procedure starts by taking off the Rack And Pinion heat shield followed by disconnection of the two rear transmission mount upper mounting nuts. Separate variable effort steering electrical connection when it exists. Place a drain pan beneath the automobile then disconnect both power steering pressure tubing (1) and return hose (2) from the Rack And Pinion. Attach a jack below the engine frame's back section and then take out the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts. Begin by removing the rear mounting bolts from the engine frame but maintain proper frame support at all times while you lower the frame partially to reach the Rack And Pinion. Lower the rear portion of the engine frame and extract the Rack And Pinion from its position on the vehicle's right-hand side. Place the Rack And Pinion inside the vehicle then elevate the engine frame's rear section. Secure both rear engine frame mounting bolts with 192 nm (142 ft. Lbs.) torque before tightening the transmission mount upper mounting nuts to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs). Screw in the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts so they reach a torque setting of 120 nm (89 ft. Lbs.). Fasten lines 1 & 2 (power steering pressure and return) to the Rack And Pinion using torque of 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Drain the pan first then hook up the power steering electrical connector before placing the Rack And Pinion heat shield and variable effort steering gear. Attach the Steering Knuckle-mounted outer tie rod ends by tightening the retaining nuts to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Connect the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion while installing its pinch bolt and tighten it to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Finish the installation by lowering the vehicle then removing j42640 from the steering column and bleeding power steering while performing front toe adjustment.
