• Q: How to replace the upper control arm bushings on 2002 Chevrolet Camaro?

  A: To replace the upper Control Arm bushings, one must bring the required tools: Control Arm Bushing receiver (J 21474-5), upper Control Arm nut (J 21474-18), upper Control Arm screw (J 21474-19), half moon spacer (J 39872) and upper Control Arm Bushing receiver/installer (J 39930). Start by removing the upper Control Arm and take along the bolts and screws and nuts and separate the front upper Control Arm from the upper Control Arm support. To remove the upper Control Arm Bushing, thread j 21474-19 through j 39930 of the former being sure that the three tangs on the latter are against the screw head and the upper Control Arm Bushing, revolving said bushing as needed. Next, run the smaller end of j21474-5 onto j21474-19, install the thrust washer on j21474-19 with seams facing j21474-5 and install j39872 to keep the bushing preventing metal distortion. Joint j39930 and j21474-5, them install j21474-18 to j21474-19, tighten j21474-18 until the bushing is fully remove by popping noise. To assemble, mount the Control Arm securely in a vise, thread j 21474-19 with tangs not facing in; install a new bushing on j 21474-19 with indentations; and thread in the Control Arm from the outside, as indicated. Mount j 21474-5 internally, on the seam side of the thrust, install washer 21165 with the seam facing the bearing, attach j 39872 again in order to prevent deformation. Lastly, bolt j 21474-18 to j 21474-19, making sure that the tangs engage the bushing indentations and tightening until flush on the Control Arm. Retention of the front upper Control Arm to the support, screws, and nuts, tighten to 98 nm (72 ft. Lbs.), and then installing the upper Control Arm.
