• Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2002 Chevrolet Corvette?

  A: To change the park/neutral position switch, first lift and secure the vehicle. Take out the intermediate Exhaust Pipe and let the lh Muffler assembly hang. Shift the transmission into neutral removing the nuts holding the transmission shift control cable bracket to the transmission cognizance not to pull the shift control cable as the rod end guide tubes are not flexible. Carefully unhook the shift control cable end clip from the transmission shift lever stud, move the transmission Shift Cable and brackets, and remove the park/neutral position switch electrical connectors. With wrench on the manual shaft transmission wrench flats to stop the shaft from turning the range selector (shift) lever retaining nut must be removed and then the range selector (shift) lever. Make sure you do not take the transmission out of neutral before you remove the park/neutral position switch mounting bolts and slide the switch off the manual shaft. For an installation, use the park/neutral position switch aligner (J 41364-A) to align the switch with the manual shaft and correspond the two lower slots to the switch tabs to the tool, the upper pin at the tool must align with the slot on the switch top. Ensure that the transmission is still on neutral and do not take away the tool until you're told. Mount the park/neutral position switch to the transmission manual shaft, aligning the flats on the switch hub with those on the manual shaft, and slide the switch until the mounting bracket contacts the transmission case. Rivet the park/neutral position switch mounting bolts and tighten them to 27 nm. (20 ft. Lbs.). Pull the tool out and install the transmission range selector (shift) lever onto the manual shaft at an upright position. With the wrench on the transmission manual shaft wrench flats, install the range selector (shift lever) retaining nut and torque to 20 nm (15 ft lbs.). Connect the park / neutral position switch electrical connectors, install transmission shift control cable & bracket, align the transmission shift control cable end to transmission shift lever stud & careful secure the shift control cable end clip. Finally, bolt the nuts fastening the transmission shift control cable bracket to the transmission using 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) of torque and re-install the intermediate Exhaust Pipe, engage the transmission into park, and lower the vehicle.
