2002 Chevrolet Express 2500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2002 Chevrolet Express 2500?
A: First remove the engine front cover along with the Crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring before starting Timing Chain and sprocket replacement. Installing a 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt into the Crankshaft end will enable engine rotation but the bolt must be both the Crankshaft balancer bolt and shorter than one inch to prevent damage. Align both sprocket timing marks under these conditions when the number four cylinder reaches top dead center (TDC) during its compression stroke. First detach the camshaft sprocket bolts followed by removing the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. Use the Crankshaft gear remover (J 5825-A) to take out both the Crankshaft sprocket and the Crankshaft balancer key. The installation process demands clean Timing Chain and sprocket components. Insert the Crankshaft balancer key into its keyway on the Crankshaft while maintaining alignment or a slight slope. Use the installer (J 5590) to set the keyway of the Crankshaft sprocket to the balancer key position before final installation. Align the Crankshaft sprocket's alignment mark to face 12 o'clock before mounting the camshaft sprocket with its mark positioned at 6 o'clock. Both sprockets should maintain proper alignment. Screw in the camshaft sprocket bolts while torquing them to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). When finished install the Crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring with the balancer key as a guide before pushing it onto the Crankshaft until fully seated and removing the bolt from the Crankshaft for engine front cover placement.
