How to replace the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 1 on 2002 Chevrolet Impala?

Initiate sensor replacement by turning OFF the ignition first then disconnect the HO2S 1 from its position. Using the HO2S 1 threads requires anti-seize compound that contains graphite suspended in fluid with glass beads inside it. As the graphite substance burns off, glass beads inside the sensor will stay in place to help with easier functional removal. The installation process requires anti-seize compound application on threads because this compound comes standard on new sensors throughout their manufacturing but disappears if sensors need removal for service. Install the Heated Oxygen Sensor Wrench (J 39794-6) to slowly loosen the HO2S component. New or service sensors must receive threads application of anti-seize compound GM P/N 5613695 or an equivalent before installation. Chose an anti-seize substance to apply to the sensor threads and torque the HO2S 1 to 41 N.m (30 lb ft) before reattaching the sensor.
