2002 Chevrolet Tahoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe?
A: To overhaul the rear brake caliper, first you should remove it from the vehicle. Peel a little wood and place it in front of the Piston to avoid damaging it later on, then, accurse a permissible amount of compressed air into the brake hose entrance port gap to evict the Piston. Then remove the Piston boot and seal, brake caliper bleed screw cap, and bleed screw. Check the brake caliper bore and Piston seal groove for excessive scoring or corrosion; if and when found, replace with the brake caliper housing. Check the brake caliper mounting bracket guide surfaces for corrosion and wear, and if required replace the bracket. Clean all residues from brake pad guiding surfaces on brake caliper housing and mount bracket, as well as all parts not covered by the repair kit using denatured alcohol. Dry everything with filtered unlubricated compressed air, and blow all passages in the brake caliper housing and bleeder valve. To assemble install a brake caliper bleed screw and tighten up 12 nm as well as the 106 inch (lbs and install a bleed screw cap). Lubricate the brake caliper bore seal groove and the new Piston seal with break fluid, gm p/n 12388967 (Canadian P/N 992667) and insert seal in the groove so that it is not twisted. Apply lubrication to the brake caliper bore and Piston of the brake fluid, then place the boot to cover the Piston end opposite the brake caliper housing Piston bore opening with fold going towards the opening and ensuring that the boot fit in the groove before it slips the Piston into the bore. Push the Piston down to the lower end of the bore with the boot properly seated in the Piston groove as well as the brake caliper bore groove. Repeat the process of lubrication and installation of the other Piston, and finally, install the brake caliper back onto the vehicle.
