2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the steering wheel module on 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: The first step to replace the air bag clock spring starts with disabling the Steering Wheel module then positioning the Steering Column at the center point. The first step should be removing the Steering Wheel from the column and then moving on to disassemble upper and lower trim covers. Perform accident damage inspections on the Steering Column. A Steering Wheel with pad control requires removal of its air bag clock spring and wire harness assembly in a single piece. Either remove the coil assembly as one unit or separate it from the rest of the parts. Then you need to remove both the wire harness strap and the wire harness assembly when possible. Take out the air bag clock spring by using snap ring pliers to first remove the retaining ring. Remove the wave washer in case of necessity. Install the wave washer first and make sure the block tooth of the Steering Shaft assembly faces the 12 o'clock mark. Installers should avoid removing the centering tab which comes with the new air bag clock spring until total installation completion. Make sure to center the existing coil before its reuse. To assemble the Steering Wheel module coil to the horn tower through the shaft lock or cam orientation plate push it onto the Steering Shaft assembly. Discard the centering tab present on the brand-new air bag clock spring before installation. Fits the retaining ring properly on the groove of race and upper shaft assembly then install it with snap ring pliers. Wiring harness installation should begin once pad control is present on the Steering Wheel. Apply the wire harness strap together with the upper and lower trim covers and the Steering Wheel to the column. Conclude the air bag clock spring setup.
