2003 Buick Century Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on 2003 Buick Century?
A: The repair process begins with a sir system disablement and then moving forward to remove the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module. Move on to remove the Steering Wheel nut but keep track of the alignment between Steering Shaft and wheel. If the vehicle has a tilt column remove the Steering Wheel by pulling the tilt lever straight out before removing the tilt lever assembly. Start by taking out the two torx(r) head screws from the lower shroud before removing the lower shroud followed by the removal of two torx(r) head screws from the upper shroud before taking out the upper shroud. Detach the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness before removing the retaining ring and air bag clock spring from the Steering Shaft. Discard the replaced coil if any. Position the wheels toward straight ahead while placing block tooth and centering mark in alignment at the 12 o'clock mark. Follow the instructions mentioned on the coil assembly's notice if you need to center the components. The manufacturer pre-performs centering adjustments to the new air bag clock spring assembly before shipping it. Users should wait to remove the centering tab after finishing the installation process. Install the new air bag clock spring assembly onto the Steering Shaft by aligning it with the horn tower of the turn signal cancel cam assembly while making sure the retaining ring securely fixes the air bag clock spring. Use 1.5 n.m (13 lb in) torque for the two torx(r) head screws that secure the upper shroud after tab removal. To attach the lower shroud use 2 torx(r) head screws which must be tightened to the same specification while making sure the tabs properly connect. Vehicles equipped with a tilt column require users to align and slide the tilt lever handle toward the steering column for locking in position. Use the Steering Wheel hole to pass the wiring and then adjust the Steering Wheel to match the Steering Shaft's reference point before nutting it to 41 n.m (30 lb ft). The inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module should be installed next and the sir system must be enabled.
