2003 Buick LeSabre Tie Rod Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the inner tie rod (Quiet Valve) on 2003 Buick LeSabre?
A: Replacing the quiet valve inner Tie Rod requires initial boot removal from the Rack And Pinion assembly. Secure the gear inside the vise without adjusting the steering gear preload until you remove the inner Tie Rod because changes could hurt the pinion and steering gear. After removing the shock dampener from the inner Tie Rod assembly you must slide it back onto the rack . Start by applying a pipe wrench to the rack area beside the inner Tie Rod housing and using a wrench to grip the flats of the inner Tie Rod housing while you twist it counterclockwise until the rack and inner Tie Rod separate. To continue, remove the shock dampener from inside the inner Tie Rod housing and install it onto the rack. Use a pipe wrench on the rack end of the inner Tie Rod housing while fitting a wrench to the flats of this housing to turn it counterclockwise until the inner Tie Rod separates from the rack end. Scrape all existing loctite materials from both rack and inner Tie Rod threads only when both parts have female rack and male inner Tie Rod design. When the system contains female rack with male inner Tie Rod , loctite should be absent. When assembling place the shock dampener in front of the rack while ensuring the threads stay clean for application of loctite 262 or equivalent to inner Tie Rod threads on configurations using female rack and male inner Tie Rod. Apply a pipe wrench on the rack near the inner Tie Rod housing while using j34028 on the flats of the housing to tighten the assembly to 100 nm(74 ft. Lbs.). A shock dampener installation requires clean threads on the rack ahead of applying loctite 262 or equivalent to female rack to male inner Tie Rod systems. Apply a pipe wrench to the rack housing next to the inner Tie Rod and use j34028 on the housing flats to torque the rack to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.). Place the inner Tie Rod assembly into a vise and stake both sides of the female inner Tie Rod assembly housing to the male rack when working with male rack and female inner Tie Rod configurations. A 0.25 mm gauge should be placed between the rack and inner Tie Rod housing while checking that the gauge will not fit between the stake. To finalize the assembly you should insert the shock dampener so its front lip reaches the inner Tie Rod housing before completing the Rack And Pinion boot.
