2003 Cadillac CTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Cam Gear on 2003 Cadillac CTS?
A: Renewing the camshaft drive sprocket starts with Timing Belt removal. The torque/angle meter (J 42098) should be used to rotate the Crankshaft counterclockwise until reaching 60 degrees btdc where the index mark on the oil pump cover indicates this position to prevent valve contact with pistons. You must remove the camshaft drive sprocket bolts while using the Timing Belt alignment kit to stop rotations of drive sprockets when taking out the bolts and disposing of the old screw. The alignment tools should be removed after extracting the camshaft drive sprocket. Installation of Crankshaft requires verification that the Crankshaft position remains at 60 degrees btdc. Installing the camshaft drive sprockets begins by matching the numbered slots on the drive sprockets to the pins on the camshafts with the reference mark on the drive sprocket in view of the notch on the rear Timing Belt cover. Attach the new camshaft drive sprocket correctly while placing its pin into the designated position. Position the new camshaft drive sprocket bolt and readjust the drive sprockets to match the reference marks with the notches present on the rear Timing Belt cover when needed. When tightening the new bolt apply the Timing Belt alignment kit (J 42069-1 or J 42069-2) to secure the camshaft drive sprocket together with the camshaft before torquing it to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). The torque/angle meter (J 36660-A) should be used to rotate the Crankshaft gear bolt until it reaches 60 degrees then another 15 degrees. Reinstall the Timing Belt after placing the Crankshaft at top dead center with the torque/angle meter (J 42098).
