• Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2003 Cadillac DeVille?

  A: To start replacing the vacuum Brake Booster position your vehicle on level ground, block the front wheels, and apply the parking brake. Change the gear lever to its lowest setting to reach underneath and take out the air cleaner plus cruise control parts and throttle linkage with its support. Unplug the electrical connector on the left strut tower then free the master cylinder nuts before sliding the Brake Booster-free brake unit towards the front position without hurting the brake pipes. Pull out both ends of the vacuum check valve from the vacuum booster as well as its shift control cable connection to the shaft lever pin. Also disconnect the inlet heater pipe, left closeout insulator panel, and left knee bolster bracket for access. Step one to reach the Brake Pedal over vacuum seal is to unscrew the Steering Column mounting bolts then let the column drop before holding it in place. Release the brake pushrod section by removing both the clip and foam spacer at the Brake Pedal clevis end. Detach both vacuum Brake Booster mounting nuts (2, 3) from the Brake Pedal assembly and extract the vacuum Brake Booster. Change the Brake Booster mounting gasket when needed. Lbs.) and put a small amount of lubricant (GM P/N 12346293 or equivalent) on the clevis pin of the Brake Pedal. Connect the pushrod to the clevis pin through the foam spacer and retainer clip. Place back the Steering Column and its holder bushings then put on the left knee bolster bracket, left insulator and shift over the inlet heater line. Insert the gear shift to park position then add the vacuum check valve onto the Brake Booster followed by the master cylinder to its vacuum Brake Booster base. First attach the electrical connector to the left strut tower before you put back the accelerator control cable and its bracket, and hang up the Cruise Control Module. Take off wheel blocks from the front wheels and let go of the parking brake.
