2003 Cadillac Escalade Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2003 Cadillac Escalade?
A: To replace the rear brake caliper, you have to examine the fluid level of the brake master cylinder reservoir first. If it is midway between the maximum-full and minimal allowable level then no need to take out fluid but if it is high remove fluid to the midway point. Lift up the car, dispose of the tire and wheel set. Use a large c-clip placed over the head of the piston portion with the c's legs pressing down on the housing where the outboard pin is at the back and tighten the c until the piston seals were pushed down into the piston bores to go back off. Clean the end of brake hose and fit a rubber cap or plug on the open end of brake pipe fitting to avoid leakage and contamination of the fluid. Pull off the brake hose to caliper bolt and dispose of the 2 copper brake hose gaskets, in case they stick to the caliper housing or brake hose end. Rotating the caliper bolt and uncoupling the bolt, take out the brake caliper from the vehicle, inspecting the assembly of the caliper. With new brake pads, use a c-clamp to press the pistons to the bottom of the caliper bores, covering the pistons and the caliper boots with an old Brake Pad, a metal plate, or a piece of wood. Push the inner edge of the caliper boots adjacent to both pistons with a small flat-bladed tool, lowering them below the face of the pistons to release any stuck air. Mount the brake caliper to the mounting bracket if the complete set is removed, and there are traces of the original adhesive patch, clean the threads of the bolt by using the brake parts cleaner and apply threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) on the threads and bolt before mounting the brake caliper mounting on it. Tighten the guide pin bolts to 42 n.m (31 lb ft), if used on a 15 series, or 108 n.m (80 ft lb) if used in a 25 series, and then remove the rubber plug from the pull end of the brake hose fitment. Replace 2 new copper brake hose gaskets and attach the brake hose at the caliper, the brake hose to the caliper bolt will need 40 n.m (30 lb ft.) of torque. Bleed the hydraulic brake system, put in the tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle and fill the master cylinder reservoir to the right level with clean brake fluid.
