2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle in a torsion bar suspension system on 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500?
A: Service and repair of the Steering Knuckle requires a three-step process which starts with vehicle elevation and support then tire and wheel removal. The system requires support from a safety stand before technicians disconnect the electronic suspension control (ESC) link rod from the sensor when present on the vehicle. Unloading the torsion bars allows you to remove both the Wheel Hub assembly with its bearings. You need to disconnect the outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckle before removing the brake hose bracket retaining bolt. Using tool j 43631 (Ball Joint Remover) and j 45851 (Ball Joint Separator Protector Adapters) detach the upper Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle after you remove its upper Control Arm retaining nut followed by the lower Ball Joint after removing its retaining nut. Remove all contaminants from ball joints and tie rod threads before inspecting the Steering Knuckle's mounting surfaces and taper holes for damage. Replace any knuckle that shows elongated holes or damage to the surface. Follow this order when installing the Steering Knuckle: engage the lower Ball Joint then tighten the retaining nut to 100 n.m (74 lb ft). Secure the upper Ball Joint by installing its retaining nut then adjust the torque to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). The brake hose installation requires a bracket retaining bolt tightened to 9 n.m (80 lb in) before adding the outer tie rod and Wheel Hub and bearing assembly. The esc link rod sensor must have its rod reconnected before installing the tire and wheel followed by Torsion Bar loading and safety stand removal. The vehicle must be lowered while wheel alignment must be checked.
