2003 Chevrolet Cavalier Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front parking brake cable on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The replacement process starts with obtaining tools that include a Parking Brake Cable release tool (J 37043). Start by taking out the floor console and following procedures to relieve tension in the park brake cable system. First detach the front park brake cable end from the lever reel assembly then utilize the Parking Brake Cable release tool (J 37043) to free up the cable conduit end fitting from this assembly. Raise and support the vehicle before you disconnect the front cable end from the right cable connector and remove the front cable conduit end fitting from the cable equalizer. Unfasten the front cable from its retaining strap placement on the left side of the axle before extracting the front cable guide retaining bolt. First completely lower the vehicle while releasing the front cable pass-thru grommet from under the bottom of the vehicle. Then remove the rear seat cushion followed by the left side carpet retainer. Access the vehicle cable through repositioning the carpet before using the retaining clip on the Floor Pan to free the cable. Then remove the front cable from the entire vehicle system. Start the front park brake cable installation by fitting it into the vehicle body followed by a proper positioning through the pass-thru opening beneath the Floor Pan until the grommet is installed and fully seated. The process requires securing the cable to the retaining clip on the Floor Pan and then reinstalling carpet as well as the left side carpet retainer leading to replacement of the rear seat cushion. Use the jack stand to lift the vehicle and proceed with lidetment of the front park brake cable guide retaining bolt at 10 nm (89 lb in), before securing the front cable within its left-side retaining strap on the axle. You must join the front cable conduit end fitting with the cable equalizer before attaching the front cable end to the right cable connector. The cable installation process for front park brake becomes possible by first lowering the vehicle and attaching the conduit end fitting correctly to the lever assembly before its cable end connects to the reel assembly. The last step consists of applying tension to the park brake cable system before installing the floor console back in place.
