2004 Chevrolet Cavalier Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the right rear parking brake cable on 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The right rear park brake cable replacement process requires users to release park brake cable system tension before supporting and raising the vehicle. Before installation detach the right rear cable from its front cable connector and then take out the pipe length from the axle bracket terminal. Start by taking off the right rear tire together with wheel assembly then proceed to take out the Brake Drum. A flat-bladed screwdriver should be used to push down the visible retaining tab on the park brake cable fitting until the released cable end can access the backing plate opening. Move the park brake cable to reach the second retaining tab which can be released with a screwdriver until the cable fitting separates from the backing plate. Complete the opening inside the backing plate for the cable return spring before moving the cable toward the back of the vehicle to free up the end of the cable from the park brake lever. A flat-bladed screwdriver shall be used to lift the cable until it is completely free from the lever before removing the cable. When installing the park brake cable you must pass it through the backing plate aperture with the cable return spring placed behind the spring positioning tab. Continue pushing the cable forward beyond the slot on the park brake lever while keeping it on the outside of the secondary Brake Shoe. Secure the cable by holding down its position then guide it to back of the lever before pushing the cable into the slot and pulling it forward for securement. Insert a flat-bladed screwdriver into the opening on the lever to prevent the cable from lifting out during the cable pulling motion. Use the opening in the backing plate to pass the cable return spring before attaching the cable fitting to the backing plate by achieving proper placement of the retaining tabs. Put back on the Brake Drum and mount the right rear tire together with wheel assembly. Press the cable firmly as you secure the end fitting to the axle bracket of the conduit until the seat becomes proper. Lower the vehicle while securing the cable end to the cable equalizer before recovering tension from the park brake cable system.
