• Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier?

  A: You need to collect the necessary tools before starting work to replace your Water Pump and you must order the Water Pump holding tool (part number J 43651). Start by detaching the Exhaust Manifold when servicing automatic transmission before draining the cooling system. Support the vehicle properly and raise it before you unmount the right front wheel and tire. Then remove the fender lining. Attach the Water Pump holding tool j43651 to the Water Pump sprocket and mount it to the engine front cover by fastening the access plate bolts. Unbolt the sprocket from Water Pump and proceed with unscrewing the bolts that anchor Water Pump to engine block then engine front cover. Take out the Water Pump by first removing the feed pipe from the Water Pump to thermostat location and then unscrewing the 2 engine block attachment bolts. Insert the threaded stud through the Water Pump sprocket and hub until alignment then install the Water Pump using the 2 engine block bolts and tighten them to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Connect the feed pipe to its Thermostat Housing after installing engine front cover bolt , lower bolt and bolt while tightening them to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Replace the threaded stud in the Water Pump sprocket before bolting it to the pump with two fasteners. Set aside j 43651 Water Pump holding tool and fit the access plate to the Timing Cover at the Water Pump sprocket position before tightening bolts to 10 nm (18 inch lbs.). Place back the front fender liner, put on the right front tire and wheel along with the Exhaust Manifold where required and add coolant to your cooling system.
