• Q: How to replace the water pump on 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier?

  A: The first step to install a new Water Pump is to take off the Exhaust Manifold on automatic transmission vehicles followed by draining the cooling system and lifting the car. Take off the front tire and wheel then disassemble the front fender liner from the right side. Installing two pins at each side of the sprocket secures the Water Pump holding tool (J 43651) onto the sprocket front cover. Loosen all bolts that keep the sprocket to the Water Pump and remove them. Also undo the bolt that holds the Water Pump to the engine block and fetch the bolt that attaches the Water Pump to the engine front cover. First unscrew the joint between the Water Pump and Thermostat Housing then disconnect the 2 engine block bolts to extract the Water Pump. Fasten the sprocket hub by threading its stud into the Water Pump and installing the complete assembly. Connect the feed pipe then tighten the engine front cover bolt and bolt using a 20 nm torque. Install the final bolt to Water Pump sprocket after removing threaded stud and securing bolts to proper torque value of 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Set the Water Pump holding tool (J 43651) aside and attach the access plate to the Timing Cover of the Water Pump sprocket before tightening its bolts to 10 nm (18 inch lbs.). Restore the front fender liner as well as the right front tire and wheel while placing back the Exhaust Manifold when necessary and adding fluid to the cooling system.
