2003 Chevrolet Corvette Harmonic Balancer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the harmonic balancer on 2003 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Replacing the crankshaft balancer requires technicians to begin by removing the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt and power steering gear and the Starter motor. Right transmission cover removal together with its bolt must follow. Fitting the flywheel holding tool (J42386-A) requires m10-1.5 x 120 mm and m10-1.5 x 45 mm bolts that need to reach 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) torque setting. Before discarding it, remove the crankshaft balancer bolt. Also note the positioning of the balancer and the crankshaft end to maintain proper alignment when reinstalling. The process of removing and inspecting the crankshaft balancer requires the crankshaft balancer remover (J41816) with crankshaft end protector (J41316-2). Follow the removal procedure to prepare the components for installation. After marking the new balancer location equal to the original one, add balance weights accordingly before aligning scribe marks of the balancer with the crankshaft. Installation of the balancer requires the crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665) to be used for straightening the balancer onto the crankshaft. Check the depth of the crankshaft balancer after executing a 330 nm (240 ft. Lbs.) torque on the bolt which will be removed later. Install the sprocket using the j41665 crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer as needed to complete the procedure. The procedure ends with new crankshaft balancer bolt installation that requires initial torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) followed by 140 degrees torque using the torque angle meter (J36660-A). The technician must remove j42386-a flywheel holding tool and its bolts before reinstalling the right transmission cover bolt at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) torque. Then reinstall the Starter motor along with power steering gear and a/c Drive Belt. The procedure for crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn needs to be performed as the last step.
