2004 Chevrolet Corvette Harmonic Balancer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the harmonic balancer on 2004 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The required tools for crankshaft balancer replacement include crankshaft balancer remover (J41816) along with crankshaft end protector (J41316-2), flywheel holding tool (J42386-A), crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665) and torque angle meter (J36660-A). Start by unlocking the air conditioning Drive Belt and power steering gear before removing the Starter motor followed by disassembly of the right transmission cover using its bolt. Then measure the engine flywheel to verify the teeth of the flywheel holding tool align with it. The j42386-a tool needs to be installed with a m10-1.5 x 120 mm bolt and a m10-1.5 x 45 mm bolt which should be tightened to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Take away the crankshaft balancer bolt for reuse but retain its original position by putting marks on it. The j41816 device should be paired with the j41316-2 for removing the crankshaft balancer followed by cleaning and inspection of this part. Select the new balancer positioning which matches the original location then place balance weights when needed before positioning scribe marks between the balancer and crankshaft. The j41665 tool enables proper installation of the balancer which must sit directly on the crankshaft. Check the balancer installation depth after tightening the old balancer bolt to 330 nm (240 ft-lbs) then uninstall the bolt. The j41665 installation process needs to be repeated until the balancer installation reaches specifications. After installation of the new crankshaft balancer bolt tighten it to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) before proceeding to 140 degrees torque using the j36660-a. The technician should remove j42386-a and its bolts and replace the right transmission cover and bolt as well as Starter motor components and power steering gear and a/c Drive Belt before running the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure.
