- Q: How should the ABS Control Module be replaced to ensure safety and proper installation on 2003 Chevrolet Impala?A: Repairs on the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) should be avoided because removal of screws may cause leaks that can result in personal injury and needed complete unit replacement for safety. You must start by shutting off the ignition and then unfasten the Cruise Control Module mounting bolts before moving it to the side. First remove the red locking tab from the connector by pushing down the lock tab and moving the sliding connector cover to reach an open position for disconnecting the ebcm harness connector. The brake pipes require note of their positions for later installation steps before disconnecting them from the bpmv through movement that includes pipe end covering to block contamination. Detach master cylinder brake pipes from the bpmv yet leave them on the master cylinder before swinging them aside. Remove bpmv mounting bracket nuts and bolt before disconnecting the ground strap linking ebcm assembly to chassis so you can take away bpmv mounting bracket and ebcm assembly from the vehicle. The bolts binding the bpmv to its mounting bracket should detach first followed by removal of the ebcm when only replacing the bpmv. First install the ebcm to the bpmv if necessary before setting the bpmv and ebcm assembly to the mounting bracket while tightening bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Secure the bpmv bracket back onto the strut tower using a single bolt together with three nuts while tightening all lower nuts and the bolt to 10 nm (84 inch lbs.) and the top nut to 3 nm (27 inch lbs.). Check that brake pipes receive proper installation to stop wheel lockup detection that requires either a scan tool or antilock stop procedure. Installation of new bpmv requires a follow-up step where you need to remove shipping plugs first. Configure the master cylinder brake pipes to the bpmv ports while tightening all fittings to 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) before connecting the brake pipes to the bpmv and torquing all connections to this value. Reestablish the ground strap after connecting the ebcm harness connector and securing all tabs and connector covers. The last step includes module installation and automatic abs bleeding operation.
