- Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the CV Joint, Specifically the Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Seal on 2003 Chevrolet Impala?A: Constant velocity joint, inner joint and seal require to be repaired and serviced, the following tools are required; drive axle swag ring clamp (J41048), snap ring pliers(J8059) and drive axle seal clamp pliers (J35910). Start by detaching the swag ring from the halfshaft bar with the help of a hand grinder, taking care not to damage the halfshaft bar. Use the side cutters to remove and discard the big seal retaining clamp from the tripot joint. Remove the inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing and move it away from the joint following the halfshaft bar. Prise the housing off the tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar, and expand the spacer ring with a snap ring plier (J8059). Slide the spacer ring and tripot joint spider back over the halfshaft bar, remove the halfshaft bar retaining ring and clean tripot joint spider assembly and housing, thoroughly. Check for damage to the tripot joint spider assembly and housing. For assembly, mount the new swage ring to the neck of the inboard seal and don't swage it, then it inserts the halfshaft inboard seal into the halfshaft bar and put it in the seal groove. Engage drive axle swag ring clamp (J41048) to align and hold the swage ring in place while tightening the bolts alternately to snug and inspect for any deformities. Mount the spacer ring on the halfshaft bar. Slide the tripot joint spider assembly toward the spacer ring, and snap the halfshaft bar retaining ring using the snap ring pliers (J8059). Place the spacer ring back into the groove, add grease from the service kit to the inboard seal, and pack the housing. Install the new trilobal tripot bushing to the housing, make sure it fits flush and place the larger new clamp onto the inboard seal and slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. Make sure the inboard seal is of the right shape before installing the joint assembly at the desired vehicle dimension. Close the seal retaining clamp using drive axle seal clamp pliers (J35910) to your stated torque and verify the gap dimension on the clamp ear, tighten more till the highest gap is achieved there.
