CV Joints, Front Passenger Side

To change the outer joint and seal of the wheel drive shaft collect the tools: Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J35910), Drive Axle Swage Ring Clamp (J41048), and Snap Ring Pliers (J8059). Take out the large seal retaining clamp to the CV joint taking the help of side cutter and discard, then do the same to the small seal retaining clamp to the halfshaft bar. Remove the outboard seal from the CV joint outboard race and slide it out from the CV joint in the bar. Clean the inner race of CV joint of grease into the Snap Ring Pliers (J8059), then pry the ears of race flushing to remove the CV joint assembly from the bar. Locate the seal and take it off from the bar and carefully tap with the brass drift/hammer on the cage of the CV joint to remove the chrome alloy balls. Position the CV joint cage & inner race, 90 degree to the outer race, and align the windows with the lands of the outer race . Downside the inner and outer race assemblies, CV joint cage and balls, and remove every trace of old grease and contaminants by cleaning with cleaning solvent, followed by drying of parts. To assemble, position the new swage ring onto the small end of the joint seal and slide both on to the halfshaft bar. Use Drive Axle Swage Ring Clamp (J41048) in vise and hold the assembly while there is no pinch points on the seal and tighten the bolts alternately until snug. Apply a light coating of grease from the service kit to the ball grooves of the inner and outer races and insert the inner race in to the cage while aligning properly. Pull the cage and the inner race into the outer race, followed by the chrome balls, pack the CV joint with grease and make sure chassis outboard seal is in proper shape. Lastly, bring the large diameter of the outboard seal over the CV joint outer race and make an attempt to crimp the seal retaining clamp using its respective plier (Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers, J35910), a breaker bar and a torque wrench to tighten to 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.) making sure that the gap dimension on the clamp ear is reached to 2.60mm (0.102 inch).

Use a hand grinder to cut through the swage ring for removal.

Cut through the swage ring with a hand grinder and remove the large seal retaining clamp with side cutters, ensuring not to damage the inboard seal.

Separate the halfshaft outboard seal from the CV joint outer race and slide the seal away from the joint along the halfshaft bar.

Apply a light coat of grease to the ball grooves of the inner and outer races, then insert the inner race into the cage at a 90-degree angle.

Slide the large diameter of the outboard seal with the large seal retaining clamp over the CV joint outer race and crimp the clamp using Earred Clamp Tool (J 35910), a breaker bar, and a torque wrench to 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.), checking the gap dimension on the clamp ear and tightening further if necessary.

Thoroughly clean the inner and outer race assemblies, the CV joint cage, and the chrome alloy balls with cleaning solvent, then dry all parts and check for unusual wear, cracks, or damage.

Tighten until the gap dimension of 2.6 mm (0.102 in) is reached if larger.

Inspect the transmission sealing surface for corrosion and clean any corrosion with 320 grit cloth in a rotational motion using transmission fluid to remove debris before installation.

Install the trilobal tripot bushing to the housing, ensuring it is flush.

Slide the boot away from the joint along the halfshaft bar and wipe the grease from the face of the CV joint inner race.

Ensure the seal is properly shaped, then align and latch the components.

Position the new boot on the wheel drive shaft, ensuring it is properly seated in the groove.

Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, the CV joint cage, and the chrome alloy balls thoroughly with cleaning solvent, then dry all parts and check for unusual wear, cracks, or damage, replacing any damaged parts.

Pack the CV joint with grease and ensure the outboard seal is correctly shaped.

Clean the halfshaft bar with a wire brush to remove rust in the boot mounting area and inspect the needle rollers, needle bearings, and trunnion for damage, replacing any damaged parts as necessary.

Position the joint assembly at the proper vehicle dimension based on engine type, aligning the halfshaft inboard seal, tripot housing, and large seal retaining clamp.

Remove the large seal retaining clamp from the CV joint using a side cutter and discard it.

Use a brass drift and hammer to tilt the CV joint cage and remove all six balls.

Inspect the tripot joint spider assembly and housing for damage or wear.

Position the joint assembly at the correct vehicle dimension of 125.7 mm (5 inches), aligning the inboard seal, housing, and large seal retaining clamp.
