2003 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake pads on 2003 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level before work starts. Drain fluid if it exceeds the half-way mark between maximum and minimum lines. Lift the vehicle and then take off the wheel tire assembly. Twist hand tight the wheel lug nuts first and then disconnect both brake caliper and its pads from the bracket through retainer slides. Check all disc brake mounting and hardware along with the caliper boot for cuts tears or damage before changing the affected parts. Before installing calipers inspect the bolts and pins for both damage and rusting to replace these components with their new counterparts. Push the brake Piston downwards in the caliper bore through a Brake Pad replacement or a wood block to prevent damage. Correctly position the pad with the wear indicator inboard against the Piston during installation of the retainer slides because faulty positioning can result in brake lining wear. Place the pads on the caliper bracket then take off the 2 hand-tightened wheel nuts and mount the caliper. Place back the tire and wheel assembly on the vehicle. Let the engine stay off and start to push the Brake Pedal until it reaches 2/3 travel distance before gently releasing it. Take 15 seconds to press the Brake Pedal three times to help the brake caliper pistons and pads settle properly. Complete the task by measuring and filling the reservoir with brake fluid then running the brake pads and rotors to smooth out their surfaces.
