2003 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Brake Proportioning Valve on 2003 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Start by taking off the battery tray and recording the brake pipes positions for future use. The two brake pipes from each brake caliper and four brake pipes to the proportioning valve need to disconnect for the job. Use bleeder valve caps to stop brake fluid flow while protecting against external dirt. Place the vehicle on a hoist for lifting and then take off the left fender shield. Turn the 2 bolts securing the proportioning valve bracket and pull out the entire valve assembly. Place the proportioning valve assembly in position then attach it to the vehicle with the 2 bracket bolts and tighten their nuts to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs). Place back the left inner fender shield and lower the car. Check the brake pipe connections to the brake pressure modulator valve to stop wheel lockup problems which show up when running a diagnostic scan or when doing Antilock stop. Thread the 4 brake pipe caps off and attach them to the proportioning valve. Then detach the other 2 caps from brake pipes and connect them. Fully tighten brake pipe fittings to 17 ft. lbs (23 Nm). To finish the repairs replace the battery tray and perform a brake fluid replacement process.
