• Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2003 Chevrolet Malibu?

  A: First remove the air cleaner before moving on with the replacement steps. Lift off the underhood electrical center from its bracket then disconnect it to the side. Lastly take out the bracket supporting it. Take out the master cylinder from the booster setup by watching out for the insulator between the booster and front dash unit. Take off the left closeout/insulator panel and the vacuum booster assembly unit from its connections. Tilt the vacuum Brake Booster slightly and disconnect the brake pushrod from the pedal clevis pin by sliding it away without needing extra side force. You can mount the booster first before attaching its pushrod to the Brake Pedal. Move the booster up and down to center the pushrod for installation without hard pushing. Secure the booster retaining nuts to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.) before putting back the left closeout insulator panel. Use the booster as one unit to connect the vacuum hose and vacuum check valve. Install the master cylinder onto the booster and then attach the master cylinder to its proper position. Cap off the work by putting back the underhood electrical center bracket then connecting both electrical parts and mounting the air filter unit diligently.
