2004 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: You should check the master cylinder brake fluid before starting work. Replace the brake pads when the fluid stands at an equal distance between maximum and minimum acceptable levels. Lift and stabilize the car while taking out the tire wheel assembly. Place a large c-clamp over the caliper next to its back and the outboard pad. Tighten the clamp until the caliper piston moves past the brake rotor. Firmly connect heavy mechanic's wire to the brake caliper without disturbing the hydraulic brake hose while also taking off the guide pin bolt and c-clamp. Secure the brake caliper upwards while keeping the hydraulic brake flexible hose attached. Take away both brake pads and retainers from their bracket location on the brake caliper . Evaluate all parts of the brake caliper guide pin system including bolts, pins, bushing, boots and bracket for damage and corrosion before replacing defective components rather than attempting corrosion cleanup. If brake piston boot shows signs of wear you must replace it. After fitting the brake piston into the bore using a piston installation tool repeat the Brake Pad retainers and brake pads onto the mounting bracket . Move the brake caliper downward over the pads to fit into its bracket and install the caliper guide pin bolt by tightening it to 35 nm (26 ft. Lb) torque setting. Lower the vehicle back down after putting on the wheel and tire. Apply the Brake Pedal in short strokes to about two-thirds distance while keeping the engine off before easing off pressure. Use a brake caliper squeezing device on the Brake Pedal for 15 seconds and then check the pedal until brake caliper piston and pads fully seat. Complete the brake master cylinder reservoir then press the park Brake Pedal four times while spinning the pads and rotors.
