2004 Chevrolet Malibu Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: First remove the rear brake caliper from the vehicle by following safety protocols that protect against both brake dust and fluid irritants. A leaking brake caliper assembly requires replacement since its non-replaceable seal seems to be the source of leakage at the integral park brake actuator shaft seal. First remove brake fluid from the caliper assembly then insert a small wooden or plastic tool to precisely remove the Brake Caliper Piston dust boot seal retaining ring. A block of wood should be placed inside the caliper body while low-pressure compressed air must pass through the inlet hose to push out the Piston from its position. The Piston seal and dust boot seal of the Piston need to be discarded by using small tool assistance. Rotating the park brake lever allows an inspection of the integral park brake mechanism. Replace the brake caliper assembly if the brake lever shows signs of binding because the lever and its components cannot be repaired. Use of abrasives must be avoided when you install the Piston. Disassemble and replace the entire brake caliper when you see cracks and scoring or excessive rust inside the bore. Light rust or corrosion should be removed from surfaces by using fine emery paper. Denatured alcohol cleans the Piston bore and seal counterbore alongside Piston and sleeves. Then filterd non-lubricated air dries the components. The inspection of the caliper Piston should result in replacement of defective parts along with complete caliper assembly replacement when the mounting holes show faults. Apply delco supreme 11- gm p/n 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667) or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid as lubricant on the new Piston seal before installing it and the new dust boot seal inside the caliper bore. First establish the caliper Piston within the bore before tightening it clockwise using a spanner wrench until it reaches complete seating and check that the dust boot extends correctly into the counterbore. After fitting the dust boot seal retaining ring you may install the brake caliper on the vehicle. Examine brake fluid leakage while performing hydraulic brake bleeding after system installation. Fluid leaks from the front of the Piston dust boot seal require the replacement of the caliper Piston assembly because the integral adjustment mechanism features a non-serviceable seal near the Piston which can result in fluid leakage.
