A: To replace the Brake Backing Plate; first, lift and support the vehicle and insert a drain pan underneath the rear axle housing. Pull out the oil filter plug and the Drain Plug in order to drain the oil from the rear axle housing. Then, take out the rear tire and wheel assembly and the Brake Drum. Detach the 4 nuts of the rear Axle Shaft bearing retainer studs (4, 6). If the vehicle has abs, then remove the Wheel Speed Sensor and lay it to the side. Remove the rear Axle Shaft and the bearing on the rear axle housing with the help of j 34866 (Rear Axle Shaft Remover) and j2619-01 (Slide Hammer). Move on and take out the brake shoes and the Wheel Cylinder, then compress the stopper ring to release the park brake cable from the backing plate. Take off the backing plate from the rear axle housing and clean the mating surfaces of the rear Axle Shaft housing and the rear Axle Shaft bearing retainer. For installation, apply to the mating surface of the rear axle house a general motors sealer, gm p/n1052366 or equivalent and install the backing plate appropriately align the holes for the rear Axle Shaft retainer studs. Change the park brake cable, wheel cylinder, and brake shoes. Apply gm sealer, uncoated gm p/n 1052366 (Canadian P/N 8890OD41) or equal to the rear Axle Shaft bearing retainer mating area. Mount the rear Axle Shaft and bearing into the rear axle housing, make sure the bearing is pressed in. Install the 4 nuts (4, 6) with the purpose of retaining the rear Axle Shaft to the housing, tighten up to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.). Replace the Brake Drum, and if the car is equipped with abs, replace Wheel Speed Sensor. Reattach rear tire and wheel assembly, apply teflon pipe sealant, gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480), or equivalent, to the threaded part of rear axle housing Drain Plug before replacing and tightening to 25 nm, (18 ft. Lbs.). Refill the rear axle housing with about 2.2 liters (4.6 pints) of 80w-90 gl5 lubricant, gm p/n 12345977 (Canadian P/N 10953482), or equivalent making the oil level even with the bottom of the filler plug hole.
