2003 Chevrolet Tracker Wheel Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the wheel cylinder on 2003 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The vehicle needs to be raised on support stands before taking apart the tire wheel assembly from the left side. Next remove the Brake Drum and brake shoes. Clean the Wheel Cylinder with gm non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner p/n 12377981 and its outboard side. At the same time sanitize the brake pipe and inboard side of the Brake Backing Plate. When working on the right Wheel Cylinder loosen 2 brake pipe flare nuts without letting brake fluid escape while for the left Wheel Cylinder loosen one brake pipe flare nut while keeping fluid from leaking. First loosen the 2-Wheel Cylinder bolts and next take off the washer cap from the left rear brake valve and the bleeder cap valve from the right Wheel Cylinder. If needed also remove the washer cap from left front brake valve and the 2 brake pipes from right Wheel Cylinder. You should disconnect the brake pipe from the left Wheel Cylinder and insert the bleeder valve cap into it. Pull the Wheel Cylinder out from its backing plate position while also taking off its gasket. Replace the worn gasket if needed before putting the new gasket onto the Wheel Cylinder and finalizing the backing plate connection. Tighten the two Wheel Cylinder nuts to 8.6 nm (78 inch lbs) during assembly. Join the Wheel Cylinder to both brake pipes by removing their caps then tightening 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs) flare nuts on each connection. Attach the Wheel Cylinder to the brake pipe as directed by removal the cap only on the left cylinder connection point. When replacing the right Wheel Cylinder fit the cap on both the front and left rear brake bleeder valves. Complete the process by adding the brake shoes, Brake Drum, rear tire and wheel then return the vehicle to its normal position before bleeding the brake system.
