2003 GMC Envoy Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2003 GMC Envoy?
A: To change the park/neutral position switch, first put on a parking brake and shift the transmission in the neutral setting. Lower the vehicle and take off the nut fastening the transmission control lever to manual shaft, then unfasten the transmission control lever. Disengage the electrical connectors from the switch and unscrew the bolts that hold the park/neutral position switch to the transmission, then pull the switch from the manual shaft. If the switch will not slide off readily, file the outer edge of the manual shaft to clear any burrs. For installation, align the switch hub flats with the manual shaft flats and slide, the switch until the mounting bracket made contact with the mounting bosses of the transmission. In case a new switch is being installed it is possible that it may come with a positive assurance bracket thus eliminating the need of a necessity of neutral position adjustment tool. Mount the switch on the transmission using two bolts finger tight and install the j 41364-aa position adjustment tool (J 41364-AA) on the switch so seats on the slots. Rotate the tool until the upper locator pin will line up with the slot with the switch then tighten the bolts to 25 nm(18ftlbs). Remove the j 41364-a from the switch and where applicable, remove the positive assurance bracket. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the switch, install the transmission control lever to the manual shaft with the nut, and tighten the control lever nut to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle and try the switch to determine whether it is working well, the engine should only start when the indicator's position is p (Park) or n (Neutral). If it does not work properly, change the switch.
