2003 GMC Safari Air Bag Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front air bag sensor on 2003 GMC Safari?
A: To replace the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor, you have to disable the SIR system first. Lift the vehicle and remove the harness connector attached to the upper part of the frame. Take of the bolts and remove the sensor from the cradle. Clean the mounting surface and fitted the new sensor horizontally to the top of the frame where the arrow inside the sensor points toward the front of the vehicle. Mount the sensor using the mounting fasteners, tighten to be 6.5 N.m (58 lb in). Take out and dispose of the incorrectly installed rivet and re-secure the sensor using a new rivet if the sensor mounting holes or fasteners are damaged. In the case of a second fastener repair, remove the improperly installed rivet, widen the mounting holes in the lower radiator support to 9.0mm (0.35 in), insert and properly seat the rivnut, and tighten the screw to the sensor to the 6.5Nm (58lb in) fastener. Lastly, connect the harness connector to the sensor and crimp it down, lower the vehicle and turn on the SIR system.
