Q: How to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring on 2003 GMC Safari?
A: Begin your Universal Joint replacement by assembling these two tools commonly named as u joint bearing separator (J 9522-3) and u joint bearing spacer remover (J 9522-5). Set the propeller shaft horizontally on the press support platform while indicating where it connects to the transmission and transfer case end from the other axle end. Use the pliers to apply pressure on snap ring ends and take out the bearing assemblies. When a snap ring sticks, tapping the bearing cup with a light force helps release pressure. Mount the yoke lower ear on a 30 mm socket then let the u joint bearing separator (J 9522-3) push the bottom bearing cup out of the yoke ear. Put the u joint bearing spacer remover between the seal and the bearing cup to help remove the strapped cup when it does not slide out completely. Spin the propeller shaft to release the second bearing cup then extract cross parts and all components of the Universal Joint. Replace the slips yoke bearing cups according to the same steps when you handle front Universal Joint replacement. Examine both the bearing cup bores and retaining ring grooves for damage and dirt then sanitize the grooves if needed. Install one bearing cup partially into the yoke while applying grease to new Universal Joint needles. Push the cross into the yoke ear while lowering the yoke so bearing cup fits tightly against the yoke ear. Return the unworn bearing cup after lining up trunnions in the opposite shaft part. Press one bearing cup against the yoke to check if trunnions move freely and keep pressing until bearing grooves show. Use a dead blow hammer on the yoke to gently expand it when the bearing retainer fails to fit correctly after application of chassis grease. Finally, reinstall the propeller shaft.
