2002 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the universal joint with a nylon injected ring on 2002 GMC Safari?
A: To switch the Universal Joint with a nylon injected ring prepare these tools: u joint bearing separator (J 9522-3) and u joint bearing spacer remover (J 9522-5). Put the propeller shaft beside you in a horizontal position on a press stand. Tag the propeller shaft to show its parts. One end connects at the transmission or transfer case while the other connects at the front or rear axle. Place the Universal Joint in position with its lower yoke ear fitting into the bottom of a 30mm (1 1/8 inch) socket. The lower ear bearing cup of the yoke comes out when you push the u joint bearing separator j 9522-3 tool onto the plastic bearing cup retaining ring. Use the u joint bearing spacer remover when pressing the bearing cup fails to come loose. Insert the removal tool between the seal and cup before proceeding. The propeller shaft rotation pushes the second bearing cup away for proper breakup of the cross from the yoke while removing all Universal Joint components. During front Universal Joint replacement in the rear axle you should perform the same cup bearing deletion steps in the Slip Yoke. Look for plastic residues in the retaining rings and inspect for burrs and flaws inside bearing cup bores. Remove damaged plastic pieces from the grooves. Before using the new Universal Joint apply thin chassis grease on the needle bearings and put them into their placement in the journals. Set part of one bearing cup into one yoke side then turn the yoke and place the cross inward until trunnion fits the cup without issue. Push the bearing cup directly into the yoke shaft until the surface touches and fit the opposite bearing cup halfway on the other side only when trunnion alignment is correct. Press the yoke gently until it reaches the right position while monitoring for any obstruction. Push the press until the bearing retainer gets past the yoke wall to secure it with chassis grease when necessary. To make the yoke seat properly hit the retainer with a dead blow hammer in a controlled move. Finally, reinstall the propeller shaft.
